The History of Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc

Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc history dates back to August 17th, 2001 when our “Father” Fraternity, Kappa Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc. came into being. The founders of Kappa Psi Kappa, a Fraternity for men of a diverse culture, wanted to be joined to a “sister” organization.

After Kappa Psi Kappa grew in strength and numbers, two women came to D. Sean Benjamin, (one of the Founders of Kappa Psi Kappa Fraternity), seeking knowledge about how to start their very own organization for dominant lesbian women. Finding these women to be sincere in their Quest, D. Sean Benjamin helped them to define what is now, Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity. In addition to there being a Fraternity established for dominant women, an organization for feminine women of a diverse culture was created as well, Phi Nu Kappa Sorority. On February 20, 2002, Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity and Phi Nu Kappa Sorority were founded on the campus of Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. It was then that these founders set out to expand the membership of these organizations while working under the Greek Lettered distinction known collectively as Tau Kappa Phi, Inc. (the Kappa Family).

To provide prominence Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity was officially Incorporated on August 20, 2003 under the Florida Articles of Corporation, classified as a Not-for-Profit, Social/Service Organization. On February 20, 2008 an application for tax exempt status under the Internal Revenue Service Code, section 501 (c) (3) was submitted, declaring the fraternity to be a public charity. On July 25, 2008 during the Tau Kappa Phi, Inc 2nd biennial Conclave in Houston, TX, Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc was granted 501 (c) (3) status as an exempt organization.

The first appointed National Executive Board was comprised of Supreme President D. Jones, 1st Supreme Anti-President S. Fulton, Supreme Secretary B. Clark, Supreme Chaplain C. Williams, and Supreme Treasurer M. Green. The first elected board was established in 2006 at the 1st Biennial Conclave with S. Fulton elected as Supreme President, B. Clark as 1st Supreme Anti-President over membership Intake, C. Kendall as 2nd Supreme Anti-President over Colonization, C. Watkins as 3rd Supreme Anti-President over Community Service, T. Lunan as the National Executive Director, T. Sills as Supreme Secretary, T. Kirksey as Supreme Treasurer, N. Hosely as Supreme Guard, A. Moore as Supreme Historian, and A. Pennington as Supreme Chaplain. In 2008 elections were held in Houston, TX at the 2nd Biennial Conclave and C. Watkins became the new 2nd Supreme Anti-President over Colonization, L. Mells was elected 3rd Supreme Anti-President over Community Service, and T. Sills moved to the office of Supreme Treasurer. Newly elected or appointed Executive Board officers were C. Montgomery as Supreme Historian and C. Suber as the Supreme Secretary. Continuing to hold their respective position as Supreme President and 1st Supreme Anti-President were S. Fulton and B. Clark. Appointed to Administrative office of Chaplain was S. Hall and the Editor-in-Chief became S. Peterson.

Alpha Psi Kappa history includes participation in numerous Tau Kappa Phi, Inc. National events, such as the Biennial Conclave, annual Spring Retreat, and annual Winter Ball. In the Summer of 2007 the Fraternity held its first Summer Retreat in Richmond, VA for members only which featured a guest speaker on health issues that affect our community and provided an opportunity to serve the less fortunate with the Diversity Thrift Store.

The Fraternity history includes being approved as a Certifying Organization for the President's Volunteer Service Awards, which enables the Fraternity to recognize members for their performance of community service across the nation. Alpha Psi Kappa has been featured in Lesbian Connections magazine, has  participated with the initial formation of a Greek Council for LGBT Greek organizations, and served as an event host at Atlanta Pride in 2007. Alpha Psi Kappa has conducted over 40 Intake lines and inducted over 80 members since it's conception. The Fraternity's history is one that has been touched by turmoil with the untimely passing of Tau Kappa Phi, Inc members in 2006 and 2007. Uplifted by the strength of our bond of Bruhood, we continue to move forward, keeping our Purpose, Principles, and Mission as our focus.

The Purpose, Principles, and Mission

The Purpose of Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity is to transform an individual through Bruhood, cooperation, culture, leadership, patience, diversity, and exposure to leading figures. By using these things a true Bruh of this Fraternity may be able to lead the Fraternity into great heights, and others to a more profound world.

The Principles of Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity are: Service, Unity, and Leadership.  The Fraternity registers over 500 service hours per semester. We display our unity by joining together at National events such as Spring and Summer retreats. Our leadership is demonstrated by the number of organizations we have assisted with developing over the years; training those that seek to create a business oriented social and service group.

The Mission of Alpha Psi Kappa Fraternity, Inc is to provide the entire community, both homosexual and heterosexual, with quality community service. We will provide all principles that are uplifting.
